Folio Count is the total number of individual mutual fund accounts (folios) in the industry or in a specific fund — a measure of retail investor participation breadth.
A folio is a unique account number for a specific investor in a specific fund's AMC. One investor can have multiple folios (one per AMC, or even multiple per AMC). The industry folio count crossed 17 crore by 2024, though unique investor count (PAN-deduplicated) is lower. AMFI publishes monthly folio count data. Rising folios indicate more investors entering the market; falling folios indicate consolidation or exits. Folio count growth, especially in B30 cities (beyond top 30), is tracked as a measure of financial inclusion in India.
Folio Count is the 'number of mutual fund accounts' in India. It's not the same as unique investors — one person can have 10 folios across 10 different AMCs. The industry folio count is a broad indicator of mutual fund penetration. When folios in small-city investors grow, it shows mutual funds are reaching beyond metros. SEBI, AMFI, and policy makers use folio count to measure their financial inclusion targets.
Each AMC-investor pair gets one folio (but investors can have multiple folios per AMC for different funds).
Industry folio count ≠ unique investors (one investor can have many folios).
AMFI publishes folio count data monthly.
Equity folio count vs debt folio count shows risk appetite distribution.
