A Thematic Fund invests at least 80% in stocks aligned with a specific investment theme — like ESG, manufacturing, consumption, digital economy, or defence — which may span multiple sectors.
Unlike a sectoral fund limited to one industry, a thematic fund invests around a broad investment theme that can include multiple sectors. For example, a 'Manufacturing' theme fund might hold stocks in capital goods, chemicals, auto ancillaries, and metals — all aligned with the manufacturing growth story but across different industries. Common themes in India: Make in India, Digital India, ESG, consumption, infrastructure, and global commodities.
A thematic fund is a story-based investment. 'India's infrastructure build-out will create wealth' — buy an infrastructure thematic fund. 'Electric vehicles will dominate transport' — buy an EV theme fund. It's broader than a single sector (infrastructure cuts across cement, steel, construction, etc.) but still concentrated around one big idea. The risk: themes can take much longer to play out than expected, or may not play out at all.
Must invest ≥80% in stocks aligned with the stated theme.
The theme can span multiple sectors (e.g., ESG theme includes companies from finance, energy, FMCG, tech).
AMC defines the theme criteria — different AMCs may define the same theme differently.
Theme-based funds require the investor to understand and believe in the underlying thesis.
