PAN (Permanent Account Number) is the 10-character alphanumeric tax identification number — mandatory for all mutual fund investments above ₹50,000 and for completing KYC.
The Income Tax Department of India issues PAN as a unique identifier for all financial transactions and tax filings. For mutual fund investing, PAN is mandatory for transactions above ₹50,000 (per transaction or cumulatively in a financial year across all mutual funds for the same investor). PAN is the foundation of KYC — all KYC records are linked to PAN. It is also used to track capital gains across multiple fund houses and folios for tax reporting.
PAN is your tax identity in India — the unique number the Income Tax Department uses to track all your income and investments. For mutual funds, it's mandatory. When you redeem, the fund house sends the transaction details to the income tax department linked to your PAN. Apply for PAN on the NSDL or UTIITSL portal — it takes 10–15 minutes online and is issued within 5–7 business days.
Required for all mutual fund transactions above ₹50,000.
Mandatory for completing KYC with any fund house or KRA.
Annual capital gains statement from CBDT/fund houses uses PAN as identifier.
Minor investors can use guardian's PAN until they turn 18.
