A Registrar and Transfer Agent (RTA) is the SEBI-registered back-office service provider for mutual fund houses — handling unit allotment, redemption processing, account statements, and investor records.
RTAs are the operational backbone of India's mutual fund industry. The two major RTAs are CAMS (Computer Age Management Services) and KFintech (formerly Karvy Fintech). RTAs manage: unit allotment and cancellation, NAV-based transaction processing, generation of account statements, transmission requests (in case of death), KYC verification, SIP mandate management, and investor communication on behalf of AMCs. Each AMC works with one RTA — e.g., Mirae Asset, HDFC MF, and Nippon use CAMS; Kotak, Axis, SBI MF, and others use KFintech.
Think of RTA as the HR department for mutual fund investors — they maintain all your records, process your transactions, and send you statements. When you redeem, the AMC instructs the RTA to cancel units and credit your bank. Your folio is maintained by the RTA. If you lose access to your fund house account, you can often recover information directly from the RTA's portal (CAMS or KFintech).
CAMS covers: HDFC MF, Mirae Asset, Nippon, ICICI Pru, and ~15+ other AMCs.
KFintech covers: SBI MF, Kotak MF, Axis MF, UTI MF, and ~20+ other AMCs.
Investors can check holdings on CAMS (camsonline.com) or KFintech (kfintech.com) using PAN.
RTAs also manage: nominee updates, bank mandate changes, transmission on death.
